The Impossible Climb

By Mark Synnott
Read from 7/20/26-8/13/26
Hardcover from Chanhassen Library
4/5 stars

Very engaging and gripping book. I had already read so much about this climb and watched the documentary Free Solo at least three times. The book was still an exciting read!

I initially thought the book would be boring since I knew how it ended, but I’m glad I picked it up. There were so many small little nuances, not only about the climb itself, but about Alex Honnold’s background and personality.

The author, Mark Synnott, interleaved stories about various climbing expeditions, both with Alex as well as with other legendary climbers. The added depth going into the history of climbing, particularly around Yosemite, was especially intriguing, having spent a bit of time in Yosemite myself hiking, camping and such.

Overall, if you’re a fan of climbing, being in the outdoors, or just wonder what it would take to pursue a crazy dream, it’s worth reading this book. I think if you are an actual climber, which I am not, it is a must-read.

Now having read the book and watched countless interviews, listened to many podcasts, and read so many articles on Alex Honnold over the years, I’ve come to realize that as superhuman as he might appear, he’s just a regular guy who’s discovered something he really cares about and has gone full-on in that direction.

He’s not really superhuman, just focused. He’s spent so many hours practicing his craft that to the layperson, it appears magical. But I think really he’s just showing what’s possible when you dedicate yourself, and are willing to risk it all, for something you love.
