Welcome to the Greatest Movie Theater in the World

Have you heard of a movie theater so epic it makes IMAX look modest and Apple Vision Pro goggles feel outdated? Imagine a place so immersive and powerful that you might just believe its projections are real life.

But, there’s a twist to how it works!

You don’t get to pick what’s showing next. It could be a drama that has you reaching for tissues, a rom-com that warms your heart, a horror flick that has you hiding behind your couch, or, once in a blue moon, an action movie that has you on the edge of your seat.

The best part? It’s totally free to get in.

So, where’s this unbeatable cinema?

Right inside your head! Yep, your mind is the star of the show.

In this post, I'd like to explore how understanding how the mind works can make a profound difference in how you show up in your work in life.

I'll start with a story from my childhood that brought this to light...

Running Into a Brick Wall of Thinking

My adventure into my mind's movie theater kicked off when I was about 8 years old. One day, I found my grandfather meditating on a warm summer afternoon (he would spend the summers with us in Pennsylvania, USA while visiting from India) and thought, “Why not give it a try?”

Clueless, I took a seat on the floor next to his green faux leather easy chair, occasionally sneaking peeks to see if he was done yet. I had no idea what I was doing, but I respected my grandfather so much I just wanted to copy him.

I vividly remember that it was super hard to sit still and do nothing! I was restless and impatient. When my grandfather finally opened his eyes - after what seemed like an eternity - he looked at me and smiled, knowing what I was up to.

I recall realizing that I'd been lost in a whirlwind of thoughts while trying to be still. This moment didn’t immediately change my life or anything (honestly, I was just bored at the time!), but it planted the seed for my future meditation and related practices that I'd come to value – offering safe havens through the ups and downs of growing up, navigating school and the crazy world of work and adult life.

Over the years, my meditation practice has been hit or miss (mostly miss!), but the insight from that first try stuck with me:

I’m a thinker, through and through.

As I navigated my career, was promoted to higher levels of responsibility, and eventuallypivoted my life in an entirely different direction, I kept diving into the mysteries and capabilities of the mind. Through my journey, I discovered that understanding my relationship with my mind (and what powers it) is key to unlocking positive change.

Get this wrong, and I'm stuck (or just working harder than I need to!). On the other hand, start to see how my mind shapes my reality, and suddenly, the world opens up, full of new ideas and insights.

In this spirit, I'd like to share a metaphor that's been helpful for me in realizing this capability of the mind even more deeply in recent years.

The Mind's Movie Projector 📽️

A metaphor that’s stuck with me, that I first heard a few years ago from a coach-mentor, compares the mechanics of our mind to that of an old-school movie projector – like the ones we’d watch home movies on in the 1980s, loaded with heavy reels of film!

Your thoughts are the film; your consciousness provides the bright light that brings the film to life; and some mysterious power (electricity, whatever that is!!!) keeps the whole thing running.

This metaphor points to the fact that our realities are molded by our thoughts, brought to life by our awareness, and powered by something much bigger than us.

Metaphors can be super helpful in the mind understanding new concepts and relationships, especially when speaking about intangible and ineffable things (like the mind!). When I first heard this metaphor of the projector, and how it relates to the mechanics of how the mind works, I had a little "click moment" in my head. It helped me better understand what was really going on at a deeper level of my humanity.

So, What’s the Big Deal?

Realizing that you are living in the experience and feeling of the movie of your mind – and not necessarily what’s really going on in life – is a game-changer.

It means you don’t have to react so strongly to things you don’t like or that seem downright terrible. You can remember that the current scene - the film in the projector - will always pass and soon, a new one will start. You can realize that the metaphorical "exploding cars" on the cinematic screen of your mind are not really exploding in reality, it’s just the projector that makes it seem so!

Even better, you can know that the same “movie” can even feel different depending on when you watch it, showing how flexible your perceptions can be.

I'm increasingly waking up to this last point more and more, as I notice that things that used to bother me in the past can be perceived so differently, and through more expansive levels of awareness, that they can actually bring me joy today.

Go Deeper

If you’re at a turning point in your career or aiming for that next level of performance, it’s worth stopping to consider where you can find real leverage and power over your career and life.

As wise people through the ages have known and taught, it starts with looking inward, and your mind is about as "inward" as you can get! So you might wish to consider how much your mind influences your reality, even more than you think.

The learning and understanding that you gain might be your secret weapon in unlocking higher performance and clarity, especially when the current “movie” that's playing isn’t your favorite. You might also discover, as I do, that experiencing the mind this way allows the projector film to flow more freely and bring fresh ideas and thinking that best serve the moment you are in.

As I wrap up today’s post I’ll offer a few questions to ponder if you wish to go deeper on this topic for yourself. Please consider and journal your thoughts:

  • How does your mind shape your reality?
  • How can you find space within yourself to watch the “movie” of your mind without getting swept away in it?
  • What positive impact does seeing your mind this way have on how you show up at work and in your life?

As always, I would love to hear your thoughts and insights on this topic. Leave a comment below and share your insights!

Thanks for writing this piece. I wanted to share a recent experience about how our mind shapes our reality.
When I take my dog for a walk in the evenings, I often meet a lady who walks her super friendly dog with her. Usually, she comes alone, but sometimes she brings her husband along, who never looks at me or even smiles. I had unconsciously started building an image of an unfriendly, prideful personality about him in my mind. And I could not have been more wrong about this. Yesterday, when we were placed face to face again, I said “hi” as usual, and he gave me a smile with a side glance. Right at that moment, I had a sudden realization that this person is a really warm person inside but very shy on the outside. Reading this piece reminds me of something you used to say in our sessions – never trust your thoughts about a person; you can never be right. It is so true! And it is also true that I keep forgetting this very basic lesson.

That is such a wonderful story, thanks for sharing Sudeep!

It reinforces the fact that we are living in our personal movies, and therefore it makes sense to not judge our world so quickly, and instead see what it really “true” beneath and behind the story/drama playing out on the surface.
