In today's crazy world, we're all facing uncertainty, increased pressure, and constantly shifting expectations. As an Executive Career Coach since 2014, I've had the privilege of witnessing remarkable transformations as hundreds of clients discover their unique capabilities and chart new paths—even during the most challenging circumstances.
From the tech boom to pandemic disruptions to the AI revolution causing both opportunity and displacement, careers have become increasingly uncertain. In my opinion, there has never been a more crucial time to learn how to maintain inner clarity and tap into innate ambition. This is where coaching makes all the difference.
In this blog I'd like to share a couple real stories (with names changed for privacy) that illustrate how what I offer can serve not only as a catalyst for your career advancement, but instill in you the mental clarity, resilience, and motivation needed to thrive amid chaos and change.

Surviving the Corporate Hurricane
Victor approached me six months ago with what seemed like a straightforward goal: figure out his next career move. As a Product Manager at Meta, he was open to new possibilities. We spent our initial months laying groundwork: both clarifying his career aspirations along with a deep dive into understanding how to work with his mind in a more balanced and potentiated way. This foundation proved invaluable given what happened next.
Neither of us could have predicted how quickly his world would shift. As Meta publicly embraced a new "high performance" culture with CEO Mark Zuckerberg announcing an era of intensity, Victor was already struggling with burnout.
Our coaching quickly adapted. Instead of focusing on advancement strategies, we built something more fundamental: the ability to maintain inner balance, perspective, and clarity while everything around him changed.
This became exactly what Victor needed. When Meta announced plans to lay off at least 5% of its workforce, anxiety permeated the organization. Yet Victor remained remarkably grounded.
Through our coaching partnership, he developed what I can only describe as a professional superpower: while colleagues reacted from stress and uncertainty, he stayed calm and connected to his vision. He continued building relationships across teams and focused on meaningful contributions—not just to protect his position, but because he genuinely cared about making an impact.
The result? Victor not only weathered the layoffs with his job intact but spotted an opportunity others missed. A different team needed a new leader/manager—a role he'd never held before. Despite lacking traditional management experience, his natural talent for collaboration and genuine interest in supporting others' growth made him an intriguing fit for the role.
Drawing on relationships he'd cultivated and confidence built through coaching, Victor went after it. Despite the competitive environment and his non-traditional background (having never been a direct people manager before), he got the job!
What makes this remarkable isn't his advancement during this period of contraction and chaos. It's that Victor did so by embracing his authentic strengths and being proactive, rather than hiding or hoping for magical intervention.
Coaching helped him:
- Get clear on what he really wanted out of his career
- Find steady mental footing amid organizational chaos
- Tap into his natural connection skills
- Spot and pursue opportunities in a relaxed manner
- Take risks (without feeling anxious about it)
In essence, coaching didn't just help Victor feel better about work—it equipped him to recognize and seize an opportunity, in spite of the chaotic circumstances.
Making a Bold Pivot
Sometimes success means advancing within your organization. Other times, it means recognizing when it's time to move on. Andy's story illustrates this second path.
When Andy reached out recently, everything looked excellent on paper. As head of product at a mid-sized software company recently acquired by a global behemoth, he had been retained with all the perks one might expect (fat retention bonuses included!). From the outside looking in, it seemed like a career triumph.
Yet Andy was deeply unhappy. The acquiring company's culture clashed with his values. His creativity felt constrained, and he found himself simultaneously burning out and feeling uninspired. Most concerning was that his exceptional skills—building strong team bonds, troubleshooting client issues, and delivering masterful and convincing presentations —were neither valued nor utilized in the new environment.
Andy began with an all-day coaching immersion at my office near Lake Minnetonka to explore his situation deeply. I approached our day without preconceptions. These immersive sessions can just as often rekindle someone's love for their current position as illuminate the need for change. The goal was simply creating space for clarity to emerge.
Through our discussions, we explored Andy's natural talents and how he truly wanted to life his life. A pattern emerged pointing in a direction quite different from his current role: Andy was a teacher at heart who yearned for freedom. He wanted to share knowledge and help others learn while having agency over his time. This desire wasn't just unappreciated in his current position—it contradicted what the company needed from him.
Beyond this professional misalignment, we uncovered something even more significant—an innate calling guiding him toward a different direction altogether. After our immersion and subsequent sessions, what began as a innocent thought blossomed into profound insight. Within a month, Andy found the confidence to make what had become a "no-brainer" decision: resigning from his position to chart a new course.
Many months later, Andy's life has transformed. He's established himself as a part-time consultant while creating content to share his business expertise online—unleashing his desire to teach and help others grow. Most importantly, he feels free and happy. His journey continues to unfold, but the signs are promising.
This outcome illustrates something I've witnessed repeatedly: when people reconnect with their deepest wisdom and follow those signals - the results tend to be profoundly positive. Along with these shifts comes natural motivation, joy, and peace that no externally gained success alone can provide.
While Andy's career journey continues, coaching helped him make a pivotal transition from a balanced, clear-headed state rather than desperation or reactive impulse. Often, this is my work's greatest value: helping you get out of your own way so you can tune into and trust what a deeper part of you already knows.
Unexpected Breakthroughs
What continually surprises me about coaching is how frequently clients achieve results extending far beyond expectations. When the mind becomes clearer and decisions flow from wisdom rather than insecurity or overthinking, life flourishes in remarkable ways.
Here are just a few examples of surprising outcomes clients have experienced:
- A client casually mentioned his boyhood dream of appearing on the game show "Jeopardy" during our first conversation. We periodically discussed this desire (most of our time focused on other career matters), with him taking occasional small steps. Within six months, he had not only qualified but was selected to appear on the show—with the added joy of doing so while Alex Trebek was still hosting.
- An executive seeking leadership improvement watched as his company (where he was co-founder) unexpectedly found an opportunity to go public during the pandemic. Many deeply rooted financial concerns that had burdened his decision-making simply vanished in ways we couldn't have predicted.
- The de facto COO of a major global sporting goods company—once his dream job—was burning out completely. Through coaching, he recognized this reality and found the confidence to step back and take a sabbatical. During this period, he had a big insight inspiring him to pursue entrepreneurship with people he genuinely connected with. Today, he's part of a founding team reinventing a part of the financial services industry—an outcome that pleasantly surprised everyone.
- A Microsoft Product Manager hired me and was ready to resign because he felt undervalued. He learned through coaching to be patient and focus on strategic work instead of drowning in reactive demands. He eventually surrendered his promotion desires and just focused on doing great work from a balanced state of mind. Then, after a few months, he unexpectedly received a surprise promotion to a "Principal" level—validating the power of patience and strategic focus.
- A VP of Engineering leading his startup through multiple layoffs maintained peace of mind even when delivering difficult news. After streamlining operations, the company stabilized, but more importantly, he provided compassionate leadership that kept key team members loyal during challenging times. The process has reinvigorated his trust and interest in staying at the company to help navigate a "turnaround" instead of leaving himself.
I could share countless more stories, but the pattern remains consistent. When you develop deeper understanding of how your mind works, you learn to operate from signal rather than noise. The positive impact ripples through all aspects of life in ways that defy logical explanation but produce undeniable results.
It's Not Always Smooth Sailing
Let me be transparent: careers aren't smooth sailing. In all these success stories—Victor's navigation through corporate turbulence, Andy's bold pivot, and all the various breakthroughs others experienced—there were periods of struggle and more than a few "dark nights of the soul."
Some people I've coached with have needed time away from work to regroup. Others have faced intense waves of self-doubt or harsh self-judgment. Career paths often include challenges that test resolve and commitment. The coaching I offer helps people weather these inevitable tough times with more grace and innate creativity.
There's a concept in eastern philosophy that captures the vibe perfectly: "At times navigating life can feel like falling through the sky without a parachute, and it's helpful in these moments to know that there is no ground!" Moving forward from wisdom and deep intuition in times of chaos can indeed feel harrowing. Yet in that free-fall, we discover something remarkable—there is no fatal blow. Just possibility and the power of insight guiding your next steps.
Coaching helps you stay encouraged and mentally calm through difficult moments, so you have listen to and act on your innate wisdom, rather than reactively abandoning your career or giving up too soon. You might discover you can weather even the most turbulent storms with grace, finding inspired actions that transform your path forward.
The Promise
What I've witnessed repeatedly over the past decade is that beneath your thinking lies a deeper intelligence capable of tremendous things. This innate wisdom helps solve complex problems, bridge gaps between teams, guide decisions when data alone proves insufficient and most importantly - bring you back to inner balance and clarity regardless what is happening in your world. This capability, explored and taught by ancient wisdom traditions, is especially valuable in modern times.
The promise of my approach to coaching is helping you tap into this potential more readily. In my experience, it leads somewhere remarkable—serving not just your work but your entire life journey. Our relationship provides space to navigate uncertainty together, helping you stay connected to your wisdom even when the path forward seems unclear.
If you're looking to progress in your career and create a breakthrough of your own, I invite you to reach out.
